This is the original French film, on which the subsequent American remake
CODA was based. It's a bit unfair that I saw the American one first, because now it's the French one that feels a bit unnecessary. They are very similar - similar humour, similar plot development, and so on. A few differences - the French family are farmers not fishermen, the deaf dad runs for mayor rather than takes over the fish market, and so on. Curiously I think the American one was slightly more subtle - the French one is more knockabout, though the duet that the kids sing in the French version is more sexualised than anything that I could imagine in an American high school movie.
But they are pretty similar, and you don't need to watch both.
